Kotor 2 Achievements with Mods: What You Need to Know

As we all know, The Sith Lords got an update a while back that implemented several fixes along with achievements. Browsing this forum and others, it's quite apparent that most fans would love to see the same sort of update for the original game. Due to whatever legal hold up, this doesn't appear to be in the immediate future. Which got me thinking...would it be possible to implement achievements in-game using the journal system? Like normal achievements, they would be tied to events and accomplishments in game. Instead of a pop-up, however, you would receive a special journal update. It would be interesting if you could implement some sort of in game bonus upon the completion of certain achievements, similar to the original Mass Effect. Obviously, an additional screen within the journal just for achievements would be ideal. I'm not well versed on the intricacies of modding this fine game yet, so I have no idea if this would be possible.

It'd definetly be possible to add some kind of achievements by simply using journal entries. Those would just have to be added to global.jrl and then you need to run scripts in the proper situations or edit dialog files to give these journal entries/achievements. In game bonus effects could be implemented with the very same scripts that also give the achievements so that wouldn't be an issue either.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply. It's good to know it's at least possible. Any idea how you could distinguish the achievement entries without a separate screen? Perhaps a different format for the entry text or background? As an alternative, It would be interesting to perhaps create a terminal on the Ebon Hawk where you could view acquired achievements and their respective bonuses...or maybe a hybrid of the two ideas. Maybe use the journal for the popup and general "You have earned an achievement," message, but store most of the info in the terminal.

Is there a way to add to a journal entry without overwriting previous parts? If so, you could just have one huge achievements entry. Or maybe it could be some sort of item that, when used, checks some sort of database added in that records achievements, and then output the list as entries in the conversation log. This way, you could keep achievements from game to game. If it is possible to use a custom 2da, that could work.

Displaying the achievements in a conversation log would be entirely possible even without a new database as you'd just have to add a boolean global for every achievement and then display each line of text depending on whether or not that boolean is set to TRUE. Using an external database for that is not possible AFAIK since you can't store information anywhere except for savegames and you can't access these savegames from a new game.

Zbigniew Staniewicz, a key part of The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod team, apparently knew about this patch and even made some suggestions for it. "I knew about it for couple of months now," he told me in an email this afternoon, "but I wasn't directly involved. I gave some feedback about achievements and our team made some suggestions about things that could be fixed, that we couldn't fix ourselves - Aspyr team had an advantage of working with game's source code. It's a very exciting news for all of us!"

In July 2015, Aspyr released an update for the Steam digital storefront version of The Sith Lords, which introduced integration with the Steam Workshop feature along with a significant updates such as controller support, Steam Achievements, and playability on Apple Macintosh, Linux and other platforms.[13] Team members Staniewicz and Hassat Hunter were contacted by Aspyr a month before the update, with Aspyr product manager Michael Blair acknowledging TSLRCM to be an essential feature for the launch of The Sith Lords on modern PC platforms.[13] Although Staniewicz was not directly involved, he provided feedback about achievements as well as suggestions about existing bugs that could be fixed.[14] In order for the QA team to test "live" content from months of working on this update, they moved their Steam branches from beta to live two days before launch.[13] During that time, Aspyr gave the TSLRCM team access as well as instructions on how to get their mod up in the Workshop, while ensuring it remained hidden from public view with testing by Aspyr's QA team underway.[13] TSLRCM team members noted that their involvement as a result of Aspyr's initiative gave everyone involved a unique opportunity to resolve all remaining issues they could not perform as modders since Aspyr has the advantage of working with game's source code.[13][14]

Console commands do not affect achievements in Skyrim. I've used it to clip through places when I ended up falling and becoming stuck and still received achievements in the same session. I've also togged tgm on occasion while testing stuff and still received achievements after I finished testing without restarting my game.

NO, using the console does not disqualify you from gaining Steam achievements in Skyrim. I use console commands quite frequently, ranging from the innocuous (fov 90) to the uber-cheaty (tgm, tim, player.modav carryweight 1000) and have received all Steam achievements corresponding to events in my game, even within the same game session - restarting is not required.

I use the console quite frequently, both for trivial things like setting fov 90 and for actual cheats like using tcl to get up a mountain and tgm or tim to get back down. Even within the same session, achievements have continued to register normally. In one case, I was messing around with player.setav dragonsouls, unlocked the third tier of a shout, and accidentally got the corresponding achievement entirely through pure, blatant cheating which would have been trivially detectable if anyone had bothered to look.

I finished the game with only using the tcl cheat to get out of the floor (don't ask). My char was a level 29 and I had about 36 or 37 achievements unlocked on Steam. I then quit the game and started it up the next day only to find that I had 3 achievements. One of the ones that was close to completion was the 'Apprentice' achievement. I have a level 29 char.

EDIT: It seems like you may not have to quit in order to get the achievements. Through my own testing, I have used console commands and still obtained steam achievements without reverting to an earlier save.My process:

A second unexpected update to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 has been released, introducing new achievements, improving compatibility with certain mods, and making a number of general performance tweaks. The full list of changes, as detailed on the game's Steam discussion board, can be found below.

I highly recommend installing The Restored Content Mod. It's a (mostly) great addition to the game. You can still earn achievements with this modification installed, so don't worry about it. This mod, as the name suggests, restores content, and more content means more experience. On my 1st playthrough, without the mod, I've BARELY made it to level 30, even though I've been quite thorough. On my 2nd playthrough, with the mod installed, I got to lvl 32. When it comes to the gameplay itself, just be a completionist. Kill everything, explore every nook and cranny etc. Use security skill to open the containers instead of bashing them and try recovering the mines, it all gives you the xp you need. You won't get the floating purple +InsertNumberOfExperienceHere while doing so, but if you look at your character's xp before and after doing the aforementioned actions, you'll see the difference. Certain conversations give you experience as well, especially the ones with your companions, so don't forget to chat with your crew. Also, remember to bring Kreia with you for the bonus experience, slice every terminal, and try fully repairing any droids you can find (upgrade their shields, damage, aiming and all that jazz). It gives you a LOT of experience.

Most importantly, the game now includes direct Steam Workshop mod support, meaning players can download and install the Sith Lords Restored Content Mod with greater ease. Additionally, the game now runs on Linux, OS X, and SteamOS; natively supports PC gamepads; includes achievements and cloud save support; and can be viewed in both widescreen modes and resolutions up to 5K.

Creators of STAR WARS: KOTOR II took great care in developing the main plot. Go all the way of Jedi within the world of Star Wars, taking into account your choice. Waking up behind the backs of Galaxy, main hero begins his journey with almost no access to power without clear understanding of what lies ahead. Gradually, he opens up tasks, achievements and improvements that allow not just wandering from planet to planet, but consciously following the mission. 2ff7e9595c
